These 3 large sculptures were a departure from my tendency towards quirky creatures. I was toying with the idea of doing large, non-objective sculptures with my advanced ceramics classes, so I sketched out some ideas and made the yellow piece first. In the middle of building it (it is a hollow form made using the coil method), I started thinking of different variations of this design. The blue one was created next, followed by the red one. These were my biggest sculptures to date. Moving into the realm of non-objective sculpture was a great way to focus more on forms and surfaces. I really enjoy the contrast of the ultra smooth surface (burnished, layered with gloss glazes, and then finished with a mother-of-pearl overglaze) with the roughly carved surface (finished with black underglaze and wrought iron glaze). I could easily make 100 more of these sculptures (which I might) and never get bored!
