My Imaginary Friend

2023

Low-fire earthenware clay finished with underglazes, added embellishments

16" x 5" x 6"

Not for sale (she's my imaginary friend - we can't be separated!)

This art piece started as a project idea for my advanced ceramics class. I have always enjoyed painting and sculpting imaginary creatures - they have appeared in several of my works over the past 2 decades. The idea for this work was to create a creature unique to me, something that I would imagine being my own personal imaginary friend. Of course, my imaginary friend would have a love for pottery and teaching like I do, and like to play with bold color and pattern combinations, too. I imagine her being my companion in the classroom studio, giving me ideas for artworks and helping me with daily tasks like grading, loading the kiln or prepping glazes. Sculpted from white, low-fire earthenware clay, it is finished with underglazes and clear gloss glaze. Embellishments, including the glasses and key lanyard, were added after firing to help bring her to life.

If this sculpture looks familiar, it's because she's inspired by my painting Wallflower shown here.
